NHS Lothian Chooses Eco-Smart Food Waste Dryer for St. John's Hospital, Livingston
The NHS in Scotland has chosen the Eco-Smart Food Waste Dryer as the solution for food waste at St John’s Hospital in Livingston.
Bergmann Direct were appointed to the NHS Scotland Food Waste Solutions Framework Tender in 2015. The first installation was at St John’s Hospital in Livingston. Since the banning of food waste macerators in Scotland in 2015, all hospitals and other large food waste producers have had to put in other solutions to avoid putting food waste down the drain.
The hospital produces around 160kg of food waste a day which the Eco-Smart dries to a residue 10 to 15% of its original weight and volume. St John's was the first UK NHS hospital to install the Eco-Smart Food Waste Dryer. A second unit was installed in 2017.
Scotland was the first of the UK devolved governments to bring in legislation in 2014 to separate food waste and stop the practice of using macerators and liquidizing digesters to flush food waste into the drain system. Since then, Northern Ireland (2016) and Wales (2017) have followed suit. In 2021 England finally caught up with the passing of the Environment Act which largely mirrors the requirements in the Northern Ireland and Welsh legislation and which should come fully into force in 2023.
Bergmann Direct has now installed the Eco-Smart Food Waste Dryer at over 30 NHS hospitals and they seek to comply with legislation and abandon the old practices of putting food waste into drains.
